How I Snack

A lot of my email questions center around snacks. Everyone knows that snacking can be a huge help in your healthy lifestyle. It has been proven to help maintain blood sugar levels throughout the day as well as allowing your body to release unwanted fat storage.

The real question is what to snack on? Or how much? How often? Ok, so that’s more than one question but hopefully I can help answer them for you now. Here is a picture of my desk cabinet at work. (yes, this really is mine)

There are a few key things to note about my snacks.

  1. They are all natural. You won’t find a bunch of chemicals and preservatives in here, I stick to natural always, and organic when I can. I find that not only does my food taste better and I run a bit smoother, but overall I feel healthier when I eat cleaner.
  2. I also really enjoy things that are portion controlled when it comes to my at-work snacks. I don’t really have a lot of time to sit and measure things out at my desk so it’s handy when it’s done for me already. It’s easy to know how much I’m eating, how many calories and making sure I’m not mindlessly overeating.
  3. I have morning things and afternoon things. That’s because I snack both times. I eat something for breakfast before I leave the house (or when I first get to work if needed), then a morning snack around 10:00, lunch at 12:00 and an afternoon snack around 3:00. That holds me over perfectly for dinner when I get home around 6pm without being hungry all day and without excessive calories.
  4. Everything is fairly low-calorie. You don’t want high fat, sugary or calorie loaded foods for your snacks. Those kind of things may give you a little sugar burst for a bit, but the afternoon crash is terrible! Everything in there ranges from 90 calories to about 150 depending on what I need for the day and how I’m feeling. Keeping track of what you’re eating is a HUGE help when you are trying to determine your snacks. 

Anyone who knows me, or follows this site knows that I like things very simple anytime I can arrange it that way. A simple life is a happy life indeed. If you don’t have the time or patience to go running around health food stores to find these things, you can order them all on and get free delivery right to your home or office. That’s the way I do it to keep it simple. If you are the hunter gatherer sort, though you should be able to find most of these things in your average health food store.

There are also a few things that you don’t see here. I also love to snack on vitalicious muffin tops, fresh fruit and raw vegetables, but those are all “bring as you eat” kind of snacks because they need refrigerated or frozen.
